When the most popular teams make it to the finals

Posted on June 8th, 2008 in Sports Personalities & Events | No Comments »

Okay, okay, the Lakers dropped game 1, but that’s not what this post is about. It’s about Paul Pierce’s lame excuse for an injury the ear to ear smile on David Stern’s face right now. After one of the most boring and low-rating NBA finals the past three years, basketball fans around the world are being rewarded with a rehash of probably the most storied rivalry in professional basketball.
This brings to mind how dependent even our own local leagues are on the performance (or absence) of their most marketable teams.
According to an official from ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp., the television network that doubles as the UAAP’s marketing arm, approximately half of the league’s top advertisers have pulled out this season. The percentage as to how much La Salle’s absence has to do with it is even greater.
“Admittedly, there are less advertisers because the landscape is different,” Jojo Garcia, ABS-CBN’s customer development […]

Quotable Quotes from the 1st Round of the 2008 NBA Playoffs

Posted on April 25th, 2008 in Sports Personalities & Events | No Comments »

It’s only the first round of the NBA Playoffs, and players are talking more than they are playing. Psychological warfare? It all doesn’t make sense to me. If adding fuel to their respective opponents’ fire (like Mamba above) is what pumps all of these players up, then good for them. Just a few comments in tagalog regarding these quotes. Mas malutong kasi.
“The way he was going, we could have put 10 people on the court and probably not been able to stop him.” - Allen Iverson from Yahoo Sports, referring to Kobe Bryant’s 49 point outburst.

Kahit matanda na si Iverson, marunong pa din rumespeto sa ibang players. Isa sha sa mga players na hindi pa nananalo na dapat manalo ng “We are the championship” ala Jun Limpot.
“Better learn not to talk to me. You shake the tree, a leopard’s gonna fall out.” - Kobe Bryant […]

Go Barangay Ginebra

Posted on April 5th, 2008 in Sports Personalities & Events | No Comments »

I’ve been so engrossed about so many things these past few weeks, that I seem to have forgotten about my favorite PBA team, the Barangay Ginebra Kings. If only they had won against Red Bull last Sunday, I’m sure I would have blogged about it sooner than later.
No doubt about it, I’ll be tuned into tomorrow’s game against Alaska. This early, please replace Turner and bring back Rod Nealy. I just feel that the guy can’t cut it. Here’s to a healthy and successful season!

Thanks to Marc for sending this link. This is probably the funniest Laker vid I’ve ever seen. Props to the vocals specifically. A for effort on everything. Kuhang kuha eh.

Where is the love for Chris Paul?

Posted on March 23rd, 2008 in Sports Personalities & Events | No Comments »

Apparently, you won’t find it on ESPN.
According to J.A. Adande (who is he?) of ESPN.com, the MVP race is going to come down to Kobe Bryant, Lebron James, and Kevin Garnett. Chris Paul? There is no mention of his name in the article. After what the guy has done this season (not that it matters, but he’s he #1 player in Fantasy Basketball now), you gotta at least throw his name in there somewhere.
I’m a self-confessed Kobe Bryant fan, but believe me these people didn’t come up with this site for nothing. Honestly, the praise is well deserved. Check out his dunk on Supah’ Man on the last play.

PBA to transfer to Studio 23?

Posted on March 6th, 2008 in Sports Personalities & Events | No Comments »

Rumors are circulating that the Philippine Basketball Association may soon find a new home in Studio 23. According to my source, the PBA was no longer happy with ABC 5, and that the transfer is 90% sure to push through. The transfer however, may not happen until after the coming conference.
What implications will this have on the country’s premier pay to play league?

Ne-yo in Manila + Ways to rip of Araneta Coliseum

Posted on February 29th, 2008 in Uncategorized, Sports Personalities & Events | No Comments »

When I found out that Ne-yo was coming to Manila, I told myself that I wouldn’t watch because the girlfriend was out of the country, and I would have no one to accompany me. On my way to work this morning, Wave 89.1 was having some kind of scavenger hunt for 9 teams. The prize? Actual backstage passes to the concert. Wow. And then after each commercial break, they would play songs he either sang or wrote.
I realized, there was just no way I was going to miss this concert. Kahit general admission lang.
I immediately texted my brother and told him to find out if general admission tickets were still available. After a few minutes, he texted and said the people at Araneta said there were still 2,000+ tickets left. Hence, we made plans to meet up at the venue by 7pm.
Since my younger sister wanted to go, we […]

Uber Gayness in Pro Sports

Posted on December 21st, 2007 in Uncategorized, Sports Personalities & Events | No Comments »

Props to Mr. Amaechi for coming out of the closet after a few years of being an NBA player. Just think, win or lose, the after game trips to the communal showers must have been worth it. Anyway, that’s not what this post is about.
There’s just a lingering thought in my mind
WHY PRO ATHLETES HAVE TO DO THE WHOLE FACE TO FACE THING during altercations, weigh-ins, and press conferences. To boxing promoters, it keeps the pay-per-view orders up. But the athletes themselves? C’mon, you become nothing more than puppets just waiting to be embarrassed on national television. Okay fine, they become a few million dollars richer, but that’s beside the point. We’re talking about your male gusto here.
Take this video for example, of two UFC fighters who just went a little too far with the intimidation thing.

UBER GAYNESS RATING: 7
I gave this video a 7 because it took the […]

Elton Brand to Visit the Philippines

Posted on December 4th, 2007 in Sports Personalities & Events | No Comments »

In a previous post, I spoke of how the NBA is starting to take notice of the basketball market here in the Philippines. Thanks to Yao Ming, Asia is no longer a farfetched destination for the world’s best basketball players.
Our country has played host to the biggest NBA starts on the planet. Kobe Bryant. Tracy McGrady. Dwight Howard. Shaq Daddy. Thanks to Nike and Adidas? I guess so. It is heartening to know that one the NBA’s most efficient players (although injured), has signified his intention of visiting our basketball crazy nation. Not to promote a new shoe. Not because he was told to. He just flat out wants to reach out to Filipino basketball fans.
In this article, Elton Brand talks about visiting the Philippines this coming summer, possibly paving the way for more superstars to visit the country.
Today, NBA Superstars. Tomorrow, pre-season games. Two to Three years from now, […]
