FHM 100 Sexiest Women in the World Issue - A Philippine First

Posted on July 1st, 2008 in Print Media, TV, and PR | No Comments »

If you landed on this page because you keyed in Katrina Halili, Angel Locsin, Diana Zubiri or Marian Rivera, you’re going to be one disappointed dude. You won’t find any scans here, unfortunately.
What you will find are a few snapshots of the local magazine industry’s first ever foil enclosed magazine.
I know, it might not mean much (at least not yet), but if you have 100+ magazines on the newsstand just battling it out for shelf space and attention, you know that anything a magazine publisher can do to stand out, just has to be done.

Not everyone who buys magazines are in it for the SEX

Posted on April 26th, 2008 in Print Media, TV, and PR | No Comments »

As with everything else, sex also sells magazines. One look at the newsstands and you’ll notice that nine times out of ten, any male or female lifestyle magazine out there will have a sex related feature as one of its main cover lines. Remember the first time you laid your eyes on that partially concealed Playboy magazine in some store at the Virra Mall of old? (I once caught my cousin buying one from that store. Hah!) Sadly, Playboy Philippines is slowly destroying every bit of nostalgia that came with opening an issue of the magazine.
Macho during my high school days meant being able to bring a copy of Playboy to school without being caught. Any warm blooded Pinoy who thought Baywatch Mondays with CJ wasn’t enough just had to see her without the orange suit. While running on the beach. Okay enough now.
And then came the Internet.

Thank you GamesMaster Magazine

Posted on April 16th, 2008 in Publishing 101, Uncategorized, Print Media, TV, and PR | No Comments »

Five months after my first post about GamesMaster, and I’m finally done with my story. Everyone who was able to read (love it or hate it) a copy of GamesMaster should be thankful to the following people for making it possible.

Lisa Gokongwei and Aurora Mangubat, for deciding to bring in a videogame magazine
Denis del Callar and Neil Palabrica, for giving me the chance to make my own decisions.
Ed Geronia, Jaykee Evangelista, and the rest of the GM staff. Next to the FHM people, I think we had the most fun at the office
The Summit Advertising Team. Special mention to Cha Clarino and Ginger Taduran (O wag na masama loob) for literally hitting our monthly quotas by themselves.
The Production, Circulation, Trade, Web, and Events teams, for making GamesMaster’s presence felt in the three years that it was on the newsstands.
Of course, my fellow Associate Publishers, for […]

The Truth About GamesMaster: Last Part

Posted on April 16th, 2008 in Print Media, TV, and PR | No Comments »

I was just reading the news on IGN earlier today when I saw an item on World of Warcraft — 10 million subscribers worldwide. To put things in perspective, that’s roughly one-tenth of what the Philippines’ population will be in 2030.
“It’s very gratifying to see gamers around the world continuing to show such enthusiasm and support for World of Warcraft,” said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. “We’re always pleased to welcome new players to the game, and we’re looking forward to sharing the next major content update with the entire community in the months ahead.”

There have also been numerous claims about bringing over the game to the country. From LUG and Egames, to AMDG, the none of those rumors ever came into fruition. The license may have just proven to be too expensive not just for the aforementioned companies, but for gamers as well.
It put things into […]

How important is Magazine Cover Identity?

Posted on April 10th, 2008 in Publishing 101, Print Media, TV, and PR | No Comments »

Taking care of customer loyalty is an integral part of any magazine’s overall strategy. You have to make sure that you evolve just enough, so your readers are able to experience something new after a year or so. How do you reel in all those first time purchasers?
You put half of Priscilla Merielles’ face — er, you get their attention with the cover.
All editors and publishers will tell you that the cover is their greatest sales pitch of all.
Some general rules when it comes to making a magazine stand out at the newsstands:

Put the most important piece of information on the upper left side of the cover. You know how magazines are stacked over one another because of the limited space — well this is done to address that concern.
Don’t effin’ cover your masthead, no matter how good your cover image is. This is pretty basic stuff when it comes […]

The Verdict on Playboy Philippines Issue #1

Posted on April 2nd, 2008 in Publishing 101, Print Media, TV, and PR | No Comments »

I haven’t gotten the chance to see a copy up close, but it was finally revealed last night that Ms. Earth 2004 winner Priscilla Mereilles is indeed Playboy Philippines’ first ever cover girl woman. From a PR standpoint,  they’re off to a promising start though, as they’ve gotten the attention of some feminist groups, as well as the Church.
Will update this post as soon as I get a copy of the magazine. I don’t want to give any impressions until I acquire an actual copy. I will try my best to give an objective review. Okay, okay, the cover sucks (Just couldn’t help it!).
