My First Taste of Golden Tilapia at the Riverfarm

Posted on February 25th, 2008 in Around The Philippines | No Comments »

So where is the Riverfarm? Along the highway of La Union, if keen enough, you will see the signage to the resto under the bridge. The place is popular to visiting Manileños.
What’s special? I never thought there was Golden Tilapia just the usual Black Tilapia. The locals said it was delicious, and it truly was and it was fresh from the riverfarm.
I’m Ilocana, well my parents are tubong Ilocos, whilst me and sisters grew up in Manila. Nonetheless, we were housed and exposed to Ilocano food.I say, Ilocanos are great cooks, not just because I was born in an Ilocano family, but because it’s true.
Blend.. taste.. gosh.. truly golden.. the tilapia
The grilled liempo and chicken was amazingly tasty.. really tasty as the marinade seeped through the meat as inahaw doesn’t necessarily mean that all taste a like.
Yummy.
Add ons: You can dine on the floating hut (with an extra cost […]

Cubao X or formerly known as Marikina Shoe Expo

Posted on February 6th, 2008 in marikina shoe expo, cubao, aurora, araneta center, Around The Philippines | No Comments »

What to say about Cubao?
Change.

Cubao. I lived my childhood on one of the streets named after a city abroad. As such, I have memories to share what was. The now popular Cubao Expo, the venue or more like the “house” of vintage shops, artistry, antiques and much more, was but Markina Shoe Expo to me and my friends. The only vintage shop I knew present was the Thrift Shop since most stores were in the shoe business.
Fast Forward. Suddenly, the place became Cubao Expo or simply Cubao X. And it was happening whatever it was. Change.
Quite interesting to find Cubao becoming a hub of various expressions and I,on peripheral, have witnessed how it blossomed for another generation.
Tip: Visit Cubao X if you want to check out the other stores/gallery at night. They usually open at 3pm onwards. The shoe stores on the other hand sticks to regular store hours.

If these Walls could Talk: Casa Manila

Posted on February 2nd, 2008 in Around The Philippines | No Comments »

CASA MANILA in a nutshell
* run by the Intramuros administration
* a “colonial” lifestyle museum
* facade is copied from a house (c. 1850) at Calle Jaboneros in San Nicolas
* walls of the ground floors are made o adobe stones

What you’ll see
* Zaguan and Patio-Zaguanis a Arabic word meaning “corridor”. It is through the zaguan that the carriages or carruajes entered, dropping off passengers by the stairs.
*Entresuelo- The word entresuelo literally means “between floors”. This is the area where clients, tenants, or estate managers (if the owner was a rich landowner) wait before being admitted to the oficina (office).
* Despacho or Oficina- This is where the owner of the house conducted business together with his clerks or accountants.
*Cuartos- The Filipino family is quite extended. More often than not, an unmarried aunt or uncle lived with the nuclear family aside from the grandmother and the grandfather. They may occupy the bedrooms in the […]

If these Walls could Talk: San Agustin Church

Posted on January 29th, 2008 in Around The Philippines | No Comments »

Did you know that San Agustin is the oldest Church in the Philippines?
Did you know that before the monument of Jose Rizal became kilometer 0, it used to be San Agustin?
Did you know that only San Agustin survived the bombing of Intramuros during World War II?
These are just a few of  the tidbits of History that Carlos Celdran is willing to share with you in his tour of San Agustin.
I suppose I do not know much of our History and what I’ve learned from school were  not learned by heart but just to pass the exams. I have heard about the churches of the Philippines even went to see some of many from the North & South but I guess I just saw them.
History, History, History
History is a great way of examining our nation and our people. What did we learn in school? What did our parents teach us about our culture […]

Manila in the Eyes of Carlos Celdran: Introduction

Posted on January 28th, 2008 in Around The Philippines | No Comments »

What: If these walls could talk  Celdran Tour of Intramuros
Saturday, 9:30am
Meeting Place: San Agustin Church
We waited outside San Agustin Church to take part of the famous Celdran Tour. Big to my surpirse Celdran’s tour was more popular than  I thought. Another jaw droper: the group composed more of Filipinos. I have this perspective of thinking tours as such are just for tourist’s interest, I suppose I was wrong.
For a fee of PhP 600 exlcluding entrance fees, we had a tour of San Agustin Church and Casa Manila. Expensive for a Manila tour? Not so. Carlos Celdran will bring you back to history in another light. I’ll detail our tour in succeeding posts. I’m telling you, in a span of two hours, I learned much much more my money’s worth. Even Tessa Prieto had the luxury of seeing Carlos’ tour. He was just featured last Sunday(January 26) on TESSA!, Tessa Priento’s Column in Philippine Daily Inquirier.
I super enjoyed the tour. Anyone […]

Simply Sizzling

Posted on January 25th, 2008 in Around The Philippines | No Comments »

Grills and Sizzles is located at Congressional Avenue.
Pinoys love “inihaw” or grilled. Notice when you are in a Food Court and the longest line falls at the station where grilled dishes are served or whose station name has “sizzling”?

Grills and Sizzles is neither cheap nor expensive but you’ll get a decent steak for 2 for less than PHP500.00. On regular days, you can have the place to yourself and quietly feast on your sizzling plate. I don’t know if its because the location is a bit remote but dine on Sundays, Grills becomes a family dining spot.
What to like: Good music, good food and good service.

ZambaMania

Posted on January 24th, 2008 in Around The Philippines | No Comments »

Destination: Zambales (San Antonio and San Narciso)
Perk: Zambales is only 3 hours drive from Manila not to mention the road is more swabe compared to south.
Things to do:
1. You can try your first taste of surfing in Zambales. There are surf instructors whom you can pay PhP200 per hour excluding board rentals. There are however, resorts like Crystal Beach( in partnership with FiveForty) and Canoe Resort (same goes with Stonemoney) that conducts Surf Clinics.

Want to take surfing seriously: Don’t stick to one spot.  As you progress try other spots to hone your skills.
Another tip: If your budget permits, get an instructor to teach you not just once. Keep the instructor until you master the basics. There’s much more to learn than just standing up on the board.
2. Not into surfing: Why not Island Hop? There are many islands to visit in Zambales and many more unexplored that is. In San Antonio alone, […]
